The league was founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The IPL tournament has an exclusive window in ICC Future Tours Programme. From 2008, there have been twelve seasons and the 13th edition will be played in 2020. The current IPL title holders are the players of Mumbai Indians by winning the IPL 12th season.

Among all the cricket events, the IPL is the most-attended cricket league in the entire world. In 2014, this cricket tournament ranked sixth with an average attendance among all sports leagues.

You will be stunned to know that the IPL was the first sporting event in the world that broadcasted live on YouTube in 2010. In 2019, IPL’s brand value was counted 475 billion (US$6.7 billion), according to Duff & Phelps. In 2015, IPL season contributed 11.5 billion (US$160 million) to the GDP of the Indian economy, confirmed by BCCI.

Foundation of the League

In 2007, the Indian Cricket League (ICL) was founded, with the help of Zee Entertainment Enterprises and their funds. However, the ICL was not acknowledged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the International Cricket Council (ICC). BCCI wasn’t either happy with its committee members participating in the ICL executive board. To prevent important players to join ICL, the board increased the prize money within their own domestic tournaments while imposing lifetime bans on those players who want to join the ICL.

Player acquisition and Squad Composition

Any team can gain players through any of these three ways: the annual player auction, trading players within the teams during the trading windows, and signing replacements for unattainable players. The player’s contract is of one year with the respective franchise while having the freedom to extend their stay for over two years.

Important Team Composition Rules (as of 2020 season)

  • The strength of the squad must be between 18 and 25 players, including a maximum of 8 foreign players.
  • The entire salary cap of the squad should not exceed 850 million (US$12 million).
  • The team can’t pick under-19 players unless they have earlier played first-class or List A cricket.
