England hosted the ICC World Twenty20 2009, and the tournament opened with a shock as the hosts lost to the Netherlands in a last-ball thriller. Australia, usually so consistent, failed to make it out of the Super 8s.

The 2012 edition featured the same 12 teams from 2010, plus Afghanistan and Ireland. Shane Watson was the tournament’s leading run-scorer, with 249 runs.
